As society holds it important that young Australians learn about their history, Year 5 studied an integrated language, SOSE and ICT unit about settlement of Australia and its effect on the indigenous people.
This unit involved the following assessment tasks:
students researched a particular group in early Australian society
students in partnership, role-played an interview. One student was a character who lived in Port Jackson around the time of the first settlement by Europeans in Australia. The other student was a newspaper reporter for a British newspaper of the day. They used the knowledge from research tasks and work during lessons to select information that would prove interesting to the British public. They then reversed these roles.
students, in role, wrote a personal letter to friends or family or Britain sharing their news about their lives in Early Australia
a SOSE based test of knowledge and understandings of the unit.
In science, students learnt about conducting investigations and fair tests. At the same time, they develped their group work skills.
In Maths, students commenced the whole school maths program using "Go Maths" to implement the Essential Learnings.
After many cancellations, the Year 5 students also embarked on an excursion to St. Helena Island.
